Calypso Rose est née le 27 avril 1940 dans la petite île de Tobago au cœur de la République de Trinidad & Tobago, dans les Antilles Anglaises. Fille de pasteur, Rose débute sa carrière de chanteuse à l’age de quinze ans. Dès lors, toute sa vie sera consacrée à la musique.

Comme Césaria Evora ou Myriam Makeba, Calypso Rose est une véritable diva, une chanteuse de l’âme, ambassadrice de cette musique populaire qu’est le calypso. Et pour le plaisir de tous, c’est aussi une vraie « performeuse », une show-girl qui, à 76 ans, met toujours le feu sur scène !

Calypso Rose a notamment misée sur le titre « Abatina » en passe de devenir le tube de l’été, pour nous faire chavirer.

Les origines de la soca

Garfield Blackman aka Lord Shorty est considéré comme le créateur de ce mouvement musical. Il voulait donner un nouveau souffle au calypso menacé par le succès grandissant du reggae. Il a donc créé ce rythme musical unique en son genre, joyeux, festif, énergique qui invite le public à répondre à des instructions de danse.

Quels instruments ? 

Les percussions, tambours et instruments en cuivre tels que les trompettes et trombones sont très typiques de cette musique.  Aujourd’hui d’autres instruments comme les claviers et les guitares sont utilisés et la basse tient une place importante.
Comme le calypso critiquait à ses débuts le système colonial, les premiers textes étaient engagés souvent ironiques, moqueurs, et décrivaient la situation socio-politique du pays. Aujourd’hui les paroles sont devenues plus légères, et parfois obscènes avec pour objectif : lâcher prise, et s’amuser et se défouler !
Elle invite à sauter : « jumper » et à « winer » dérivé du mot «vent en anglais» qui consiste en des mouvements circulaire de hanche, popularisé par le trinidadien Superblue. Ce n’est pas pour rien que le carnaval de Trinité-et-Tobago est l’un des plus prisés au monde, surtout auprès des jeunes adultes.

Trinidad, berceau de la soca

Elle est essentiellement écoutée à Trinité-et-Tobago (Trinidad & Tobago) où elle est née ainsi que dans les îles anglo-saxonnes : la Barbade, la Jamaïque, les Bahamas, Antigua etc. On l’entend souvent aussi dans les Carnavals de Londres ou de Berlin, Miami etc.
A la période du carnaval, des concours de meilleurs morceaux ou groupes dont le plus célèbre est le « Soca Monarch »,  sont organisés avec en jeux des récompenses et prix de centaines de milliers de dollars.

La musique a évolué avec son temps et se décline en plusieurs sous-genres: Ragga, Power, Groovy, le Jump up, le Ragga ( influencé parle Dancehall jamaicain), Chutney soca (avec des instruments traditionnels indiens), le Rapso (influencé par le hip-hop)
